Moving Compressors Outdoors: Gaining Space and Quiet Without Getting Caught Out by Winter

Modified container, OEM module or turnkey station: three options are open to Quebec manufacturers, and nine criteria separate a real solution from a costly improvisation.

In many Quebec plants, the compressor room takes up floor space that would be worth more in production. A compressor room is noisy, gives off heat and is often more than full. Hence an option that is being explored more and more: moving compressed air production outside the building.

The space gain is immediate. A compressor-dryer-receiver package takes up several hundred square feet of floor space, not counting maintenance clearances. Recovering that space without expanding means avoiding a construction project, a permit, delays and a higher property assessment.

The second gain is regulatory. Since June 16, 2023, the daily noise exposure limit set out in the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety has dropped from 90 to 85 dBA over 8 hours, and the exchange rate (bisection factor) from 5 to 3 dB (every 3 dBA increase cuts the permissible exposure time in half). Facilities that were compliant yesterday may no longer be. And the regulation favours reduction at the source: physically moving the noise source away is the most direct measure there is.

 

Three options, three different approaches

It offers the lowest entry price and the shortest lead time. The approach is appealing because it turns a space problem into a simple purchase. But a storage container is not designed to dissipate the heat of a large-capacity industrial compressor, to handle condensate at −25°C, or to give a technician room to work around a machine. Ventilation, piping, drainage, soundproofing and electrical power all remain for you to design, have installed and have approved. The initial price gap closes quickly, and responsibility for integration stays with the manufacturer.

Several compressor manufacturers offer their own pre-assembled systems, in a modified ISO container or a custom enclosure, delivered with a single electrical connection and a single process connection. Some models advertise an outdoor operating range of −40 to +40°C. The engineering is serious and the result is reliable. However, the solution is generally tied to a single equipment brand, which limits the choice of compressors and future replacements, and design lead times are longer, since each project is treated as a separate engineering case.

An enclosure designed from the outset to house a complete system (compressors, dryer, receivers, filtration, oil-water separator), with insulated panels, oversized ventilation, double service doors and switchgear housed in a weatherproof electrical cabinet. It is operational on delivery, independent of the equipment brand installed inside, and can be relocated by forklift or crane as the plant evolves. This is the approach that shifts the most integration risk to the supplier, provided the supplier truly has the necessary experience.

The nine criteria that matter in our climate

The North American climate quickly weeds out improvised solutions. Before comparing prices, check these nine points:

  • Number of units delivered by the supplier. An exterior enclosure is an engineered assembly (freezing, ventilation, acoustics, electrical) where experience shows. A supplier with several hundred units in service has already corrected the flaws that a first prototype would have you discover at your own expense. Ask for the number, and for references in a comparable climate.
  • Documented temperature range. Require a guaranteed range (on the order of −40°C to +40°C), not just the word “insulated.”
  • Condensate management in freezing conditions. Drain valves, drain lines and the dryer must be protected and heated. A frozen drain means water in the air system, which can cause all kinds of problems.
  • Dual-mode ventilation. Exhaust heat in summer; recirculate warm air in winter to maintain the minimum starting temperature required by the compressor.
  • Location of service doors. This is the most underestimated criterion. Doors positioned opposite the compressors’ access panels allow a filter, separator or belt to be removed directly to the outside. A standard shipping container opens at one end only: all maintenance becomes a manoeuvre in a narrow corridor, at −20°C, with parts carried out one at a time.
  • Snow, blowing snow and ice. Roof load, air intakes that don’t get blocked, a cleared area and safe access for the technician.
  • Electrical compliance. Recognized certification, sealed enclosures, grounding, overload protection and emergency stop.
  • Noise at the property line. Moving the compressor outside can simply shift the complaint to the neighbours. Check the municipal bylaw before the project, not after.
  • Heat recovery. Ask the question early: where will the heat go? Moving compressors outside also means moving out a free heat source for the entire cold season. Well-designed enclosures provide for returning that warm air to the building; the others vent it to the sky.

A project that rarely stands alone

Moving compressors outside almost always coincides with replacing them. That is the time to make the most of it: replacing them with variable speed units, with a sequencer and proper air treatment, can qualify for financial assistance from Hydro-Québec. The preliminary energy analysis then serves two purposes: supporting the assistance application and properly sizing the enclosure. Carrying out the two exercises separately means risking paying twice for the same information.

So the question to ask is not “which shelter costs the least,” but “which configuration gives me back space, meets the new noise standard and still starts reliably on the first −28°C morning.” Each plant answers it differently depending on its load, its site, its neighbours and its expansion horizon. An assessment carried out with a compressed air specialist, before choosing the enclosure, prevents unpleasant surprises.
